The Market Town Welcome project will help the town and its tourism businesses to develop a strong identity for Amble. The work will be tailored to fit with the emerging plans for investment and improvements arising from the Amble Retail Distinctiveness Project, but will be co-ordinated by a distinct Leadership Group. This group, which has been convened specially for the project, will be co-ordinated by Amble Development Trust, and will include representatives from the local council, the local tourism association, heritage groups and local tourism and retail businesses.
Main contact for the Group is Julia Aston, who may be contacted at Julia@ambledevelopmenttrust.org.uk
Once the plans are developed, the Leadership Group will continue to meet to implement projects and to ensure that the wider investment programme for Amble takes account of the Market Town Welcome plan.
We hope that this website will develop as an online community during the course of the project. Feel free to use the discussion forum to give us your thoughts.
Post your digital photos on the site. Show us what you like or dislike about Amble. What would you show visitors? What would you steer them away from? What makes you proud of your town? Whether you have a full professional kit or a mobile phone, we want to see your images.
I have enjoyed living in Amble for the past 11 years. one stumbling block i can see to any past present or future rejuvination of the town is the insular inwardlooking mentality of a large percent of the local population. How many of the people involved in the rejuvination are home grown and how many incomers? People in this area seem scared of change and without involving and injecting some enthusiasm and excitement into the local populace i wonder how much can really change for the better in Amble. I think in Northumberland we all need to look outward to Europe and the rest of the world and realise that we are part of a bigger canvas where Amble and all its positives can play a part. kate morrison
We asked people from Amble attending the Market Town Welcome event what they thought are the positive and negative aspects of the town from a visitor perspective - do you agree with them? Positive - Coastal Location - ‘community’ people - Access to the countryside - Adequate signage/street furniture (but needs upgrading) - An improving image - Heritage – e.g. fishing industry Negatives - First impressions - Off coast road – sewage works and industrial estate - Possible speed humps - Not enough star-rated accommodation - Toilets get vandalised - Not enough parking - Not enough street cleaning - Services ‘second best’ to Alnwick (poor relation) - Limited eating out - No family pubs Kerry Lewis
